IHG One Rewards Overview: Points, Elite Benefits and Milestone Rewards

IHG One Rewards can support anything from a straightforward road trip to a special hotel stay. Its value depends on the properties that work for your itinerary and the benefits you can actually use. The main pieces are redeemable points, elite qualification and Milestone Rewards; keep them separate when planning your stays.

How to earn points

Most qualifying IHG stays earn 10 points per eligible US dollar. Staybridge Suites and Candlewood Suites earn 5, and other exceptions exist. Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond add bonuses of 20%, 40%, 60% and 100% respectively. Confirm your hotel and booking channel qualify; the earning page and program terms give the details.

Promotional points, transferred points and purchased points are not automatically elite-qualifying points. For example, the terms classify Chase Ultimate Rewards transfers as non-elite-qualifying. Read the qualification rules before treating a larger balance as progress toward a higher tier.

The elite tiers

TierAnnual qualifying nights or points
Silver Elite10 qualifying nights
Gold Elite20 nights or 40,000 elite-qualifying points
Platinum Elite40 nights or 60,000 elite-qualifying points
Diamond Elite70 nights or 120,000 elite-qualifying points

Platinum and Diamond receive complimentary upgrades subject to availability. Diamond’s welcome-amenity choices can include breakfast, with brand and property exceptions. Late checkout up to 2 p.m. is subject to availability across the tiers. IHG’s benefits chart explains these distinctions. Platinum should not be interpreted as a promise of breakfast or a suite.

Milestone Rewards are a separate opportunity

Milestone Rewards begin at 20 qualifying nights and continue every 10 nights through 100. They offer choices that can differ from ordinary tier benefits. Review the available awards and their use restrictions before selecting one; status alone does not mean you have earned every milestone award.

My recommendation is to choose based on your next likely stays. An award that sounds impressive may be less useful than another option if your itinerary does not include an eligible hotel. Track selection deadlines and expiration dates so your planned benefit does not go unused.

Redeeming for Reward Nights

Reward Night points prices vary by hotel and date, and available rooms are limited. Resort fees or service charges can still apply. IHG Points & Cash involves buying additional points: if an eligible booking is cancelled, the purchased points return to the account rather than the cash purchase being refunded. Check that distinction before selecting the cash portion.

An eligible fourth Reward Night benefit is offered to certain IHG co-branded cardholders; it is not a general perk of ordinary membership or elite status. If you have an eligible card, check the issuer’s redemption rules before relying on it.

Decide whether the stay is good value

Compare the full reservation against a paid stay with similar flexibility. Count charges that remain, and value confirmed benefits you will use. Search dates before buying or transferring points. A well-located paid hotel can still be the better choice than an inconvenient award stay.

Use our hotel points-versus-cash framework, then save the reservation terms. Reviewed October 1, 2026 using IHG’s official earning page, tier chart and program terms, plus the issuer’s fourth-night rules. Verify current conditions before booking.
