United MileagePlus combines redeemable award miles with a separate Premier-status system. The program also changed flight mileage earning in April 2026 and has announced new status rules for 2027. A useful strategy starts by separating those timelines. U.S. program details checked October 27, 2026.
Miles pay for travel; qualifying points track status
Award miles are the balance you can redeem. Premier qualifying points, or PQP, measure progress toward elite status. In the 2026 qualification year, Premier qualifying flights, or PQF, also matter on one qualification path. A large award-mile balance does not by itself make you a Premier member.
United says MileagePlus miles do not expire. You can still lose flexibility by moving bank points to a program before finding an award, and award prices or availability can change. Search first and make a specific plan for any transfer.
2026 earning depends on more than status
For eligible tickets issued starting April 2, 2026, United bases flight award-mile earning on eligible fare, Premier level and eligible United-cardholder status. Its general-member standard-fare rates are 3 miles per dollar without eligible cardholder rates and 6 miles per dollar with them. Card purchase rewards can be additional and depend on the card used.
Basic Economy uses lower rates. General members without an eligible United card do not earn award miles on those fares. Some cards require a spending threshold to unlock the cardholder rate. Check the airline’s current earning display and eligible-card terms; do not apply an old universal 5-miles-per-dollar shortcut.
How to qualify during 2026
United’s published 2026 thresholds offer a combined path or a higher PQP-only path: Silver requires 5,000 PQP plus 15 PQF, or 6,000 PQP; Gold 10,000 plus 30, or 12,000 PQP; Platinum 15,000 plus 45, or 18,000 PQP; and Premier 1K 22,000 plus 60, or 28,000 PQP. At least four United or United Express flights are also required.
These describe earning during 2026. Do not confuse the year you perform qualifying activity with the later status year shown in your account.
What changes starting January 1, 2027
United’s October 13 announcement removes the PQF qualification path for 2027 activity. The thresholds become 6,000 PQP for Silver, 12,000 for Gold, 18,000 for Platinum and 32,000 for 1K. The minimum four United or United Express flights remains.
United also says PlusPoints upgrades for travel on or after February 1, 2027 will use dynamic amounts based on factors including demand and available seats. PlusPoints are upgrade instruments, separate from redeemable miles and PQP; possessing them is not a promise of a confirmed premium seat.
Redeem against the trip you would otherwise buy
Search while logged in to see applicable pricing. United announced at least 10% mileage discounts for eligible cardholders on United award flights, and at least 15% for eligible cardholders with Premier status. Its terms limit this pricing to United or United Express awards, excluding Money + Miles, with taxes and fees separate. Verify your own eligibility.
Compare the complete award and cash options. Illustrative calculation: a $420 acceptable cash flight versus 30,000 miles plus $60 means $360 of cash avoided, or 1.2 cents per mile. That is hypothetical and says nothing about an available fare. A longer connection or different cabin can change which option is really comparable.
Use partners and status deliberately
Check the operating airline, ticketing carrier and fare rules before crediting partner flights. United is a Star Alliance member, but earning, upgrade access and award inventory are not identical across every partner or ticket.
Build around your real network and check your account after each trip. Evaluate Premier benefits against the flights you expect to take, and compare any card fee with incremental value. Spending solely to cross a status threshold can erase the advantage of the benefits you hope to receive.
