American AAdvantage Explained: Miles, Loyalty Points and Elite Status

Business class airplane seats

American Airlines AAdvantage lets you collect miles for travel while earning Loyalty Points toward status. Those balances serve different purposes, and not every promotional mile counts for both. Understanding the distinction is more useful than chasing the largest advertised bonus. U.S. program rules checked October 27, 2026.

Two balances, two purposes

AAdvantage miles are redeemable rewards. Loyalty Points measure progress toward status and separate Loyalty Point Rewards. Spending miles on an award does not spend your status progress, and a purchase of miles should not be assumed to advance your status.

American’s terms distinguish eligible base miles from bonus miles that do not earn Loyalty Points. Purchased, gifted or transferred miles and certain other transactions are excluded from Loyalty Point earning. Read the exact partner offer rather than multiplying every advertised bonus by a status-earning rate.

Earning on flights and beyond

A general member earns 5 miles per eligible U.S. dollar on qualifying American-marketed paid tickets, with higher rates for status members. Eligible spend generally includes base fare and carrier-imposed fees, excluding government taxes and optional charges. Some partner and exception fares use distance and booking-code calculations.

Basic Economy tickets bought on or after December 17, 2025 do not earn AAdvantage miles or Loyalty Points under the current rule. Check the fare label and purchase date, not just whether the aircraft says American.

Eligible co-branded-card purchases and participating partners can also contribute. Separate the normal eligible earning from a welcome bonus or promotional bonus, and check which portion qualifies for Loyalty Points. A card is a tool for spending you already planned, not a reason to spend more.

The status year starts in March

American’s qualification year runs March 1 through the last day of February. For the current cycle, that is March 1, 2026–February 28, 2027. It does not reset with the calendar on January 1. Check the activity and posting rules for the way you earn.

Published thresholds are 40,000 Loyalty Points for Gold, 75,000 for Platinum, 125,000 for Platinum Pro and 200,000 for Executive Platinum. Loyalty Point Rewards are a separate set of milestone benefits; some require selections and have their own deadlines. Reaching a status tier and selecting a milestone reward are different tasks.

Awards on American and partners

You can redeem miles for eligible American flights and participating partners, including oneworld airlines. American-operated award mileage requirements can vary with availability; partner awards also depend on the inventory released for redemption. A cash seat on a partner does not guarantee an AAdvantage award seat.

Compare dates, routing, cabin and the full taxes and fees. Illustration only: if an acceptable itinerary costs $650 cash or 40,000 miles plus $90, the $560 cash avoided equals 1.4 cents per mile. These figures are hypothetical, not an award quote or a fixed currency valuation.

Cancellation and account housekeeping

American says eligible awards can be canceled before the first flight departs, with miles reinstated and eligible taxes and fees refunded under its published conditions. Partner trips, partially used travel and disrupted itineraries may require help from Reservations. Keep the confirmation and verify the returned balance.

The program generally requires qualifying earning or redemption activity within 24 months to keep miles from expiring, with exceptions such as members under 21. Check the expiration date shown in your account and the current terms for any exemption rather than relying on a general rule.

When AAdvantage makes sense

Start with your home airport, reliable schedules and the places you want to visit. Then compare the benefits you can actually use: priority services, baggage allowances, seat options and upgrade eligibility all come with conditions. Status is not a promise of an upgrade on every trip.

Keep receipts until earnings post and review your progress before committing extra money to qualification. The strongest strategy uses convenient flights and useful partner activity to support a travel plan you already value.
