Bank points are useful because you can keep several options open. A transfer commits them to a particular loyalty program. Chase states that travel-partner transfers are final.
Treat the transfer as a step near the end of your booking process. Start with a reservation you want.
1. Find the exact award
Search the receiving program for your dates, travelers and cabin or room. Check the full itinerary. A business-class label can conceal a connecting segment in economy.
Do not assume a paid seat means a partner award is available. Likewise, a calendar’s starting price may not apply to the room or flight you choose.
If a result is unclear, ask the program to confirm it before you move points.
2. Read the cash charges and cancellation rules
Points do not necessarily cover taxes, airline surcharges, resort charges or extra guests. Record the cash due at booking and any charges due later.
Check the cancellation deadline, fee and destination of any refunded points. Cancelling an award does not automatically reverse the original bank transfer.
3. Confirm the receiving account
Make sure the loyalty account is active and that its name meets your bank’s transfer requirements. Chase cautions that name differences can cause failure.
Use the program number from your account. A typing error is easier to prevent than resolve.
4. Check the live ratio and processing time
The number of bank points you send may differ from the number of partner points you receive. Check the rate displayed for your card, including any promotion conditions.
Chase says transfers typically use 1,000-point increments and may take up to seven business days. Do not plan around an assumed instant transfer.
If a program offers an award hold, confirm its exact rules and expiry. Do not rely on a hold being available.
5. Compare the alternative
For a hypothetical $500 stay requiring 30,000 bank points plus $50, the redemption delivers 1.5 cents per bank point: ($500 minus $50) divided by 30,000.
Use a comparable cash rate you would actually pay. Subtract differences in flexibility or lost rewards when they matter. A high advertised room price is not enough to establish value.
6. Transfer only what you need, then book
Account for your existing partner balance and required transfer increments. Once the points arrive, complete the reservation and verify ticketing or hotel confirmation.
A transfer confirmation is not a travel reservation. Save both records and check the booking in the airline or hotel’s system.
