World of Hyatt Overview: Points, Elite Status and Award Nights

World of Hyatt is worth evaluating when its hotels fit the places you already want to visit. The program combines points for award stays with elite benefits and milestone awards. The key is to understand three separate things: your redeemable points balance, your progress toward status and the awards sitting in your account. They do different jobs.

How earning works

At most participating Hyatt hotels, members earn 5 Base Points per eligible US dollar; Hyatt Studios earns 2.5. Discoverist, Explorist and Globalist add 10%, 20% and 30% bonuses respectively. Only Base Points count toward the points-based status thresholds. Eligible paid nights and Free Night Awards can count toward qualifying nights; many third-party retail bookings are excluded from eligible rates.

Before booking, confirm that the rate qualifies and your membership number is attached. Keep the final bill until the stay posts. A room price including taxes should not automatically be treated as the amount on which you earn points.

The elite tiers at a glance

TierAnnual qualifying nights or Base Points
Discoverist10 nights or 25,000 Base Points
Explorist30 nights or 50,000 Base Points
Globalist60 nights or 100,000 Base Points

Globalist includes club access or breakfast, available upgrades including standard suites and 4 p.m. checkout, with property-specific restrictions. Resort fees are waived on Free Night Awards; Globalists also receive the waiver on eligible paid rates. Milestone Rewards begin at 20 qualifying nights or 35,000 Base Points. Read Hyatt’s benefits and qualification chart for the exceptions and award choices.

Redeeming points: use the current chart

Hyatt continues to publish an award chart. Its 2026 update expanded the existing eight hotel categories to five pricing levels: Lowest, Low, Moderate, Upper and Top. A category alone therefore does not tell you the price of a particular night. Check the current award chart and then search your dates.

Participating Mr & Mrs Smith properties do not use Hyatt’s standard redemption categories. All-inclusive resorts and Miraval have separate pricing structures, so a familiar hotel-category number is not enough for those stays. The Mr & Mrs Smith FAQ explains that participation.

Where the program can fit your travel

My planning recommendation is to shortlist suitable hotels first, then compare points and cash. A published chart helps you estimate a target, but it does not make an unavailable room bookable. Check the actual room type and occupancy before moving or buying any points.

If you are considering pursuing Globalist, estimate benefits on the nights you would actually use them. Paying for extra stays only to reach status adds a real cost. A breakfast benefit or suite award is valuable when it improves a trip you already intended to take. Keep award expiration dates in your calendar and choose milestone benefits you can use.

Before your first booking

Verify the property, eligible rate, award availability, cancellation deadline and remaining cash charges. Compare with our hotel points-versus-cash method. Save your reservation terms and check that the stay and any earned awards post correctly.
