Paying with points does not make a hotel reservation risk-free. An award can have a strict cancellation deadline, a cash no-show charge or conditions on returning an attached certificate. Before changing plans, read the reservation you actually hold. Program terms checked October 27, 2026.
The confirmation is your starting point
Find the cancellation deadline, the hotel’s local time zone, the penalty and the exact room or rate type. A flexible policy at another property in the same chain tells you little about this booking. Resort, holiday and special-event dates deserve particular attention.
Put the deadline in your calendar with an earlier reminder. Save the original terms when booking; a later search result may display a different rate or policy. If the wording is unclear, ask the hotel or program for a written explanation before the deadline.
Points can return while cash is charged
Hyatt’s World of Hyatt terms explain that an award cancellation or no-show outside the applicable policy can produce a charge at the hotel’s then-offered Standard Rate, with the redeemed points or award returned. The terms also describe alternatives when the payment method cannot be charged. This is why “I got my points back” does not necessarily mean the cancellation was free.
Marriott’s help guidance says points or awards are returned when a qualifying reservation is canceled within the policy window. Always check both the booking rules and any separate conditions on certificates or upgrades.
Check replacements before releasing scarce space
If you want different dates, first compare availability, price and cancellation rules for the replacement. Do not assume you can cancel and immediately rebook the same room at the same point price. Award inventory and pricing may change.
If an agent proposes a modification, ask for the new total and deadline before agreeing. Explain any attached certificate or upgrade award and ask how the change affects it. Keep the confirmation number for the revised booking.
Verify the cancellation in two places
After canceling, retain the cancellation number or email. Then check the loyalty account for returned points or awards and review the payment account for any penalty. A screen that no longer shows the stay is useful evidence, but it is not a full accounting of the transaction.
If the balance does not match the stated policy, contact the program with the confirmation, cancellation timestamp and saved terms. Record the case number and the follow-up date the agent gives you.
Treat flexibility as part of the price
Illustration only: an award saves $250 compared with your cash alternative, but missing its deadline could create a $500 penalty. That does not make the award bad; it means the deadline matters to the decision.
For uncertain plans, choose a policy you can realistically manage. The best redemption is not merely a low point total. It is a reservation whose price, timing and downside fit the trip.
